What is Lorem Ipsum?
Scrambled, Latin-looking placeholder text that's been the printing and design industry's standard “dummy text” since the 1500s, originally derived from a passage in Cicero's De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum. Designers and developers drop it into a layout or mockup when the real content isn't ready yet, so the page can still be judged on its actual look.
Is it real, readable Latin?
No — it's been altered and rearranged enough over the centuries that it isn't grammatically correct or meaningful as Latin. That's actually the point: it looks enough like language to sit naturally in a layout, without being readable enough to distract from the design the way real English placeholder text would.
Why not just use repeated words like “text goes here”?
Lorem Ipsum has a fairly natural, even distribution of letter and word lengths, so it fills a layout the way real body text would. Obviously-fake filler text tends to draw the eye and distract from what's actually being reviewed — the design, not the placeholder.
Can I control how much text I get?
Yes — choose paragraphs, sentences or words, then pick how many with the slider. Click “Generate new text” again for a fresh random version at the same settings.
Is my data sent anywhere?
No — every paragraph, sentence and word is generated entirely inside this browser tab, on your device. There's no server involved at all, so there's nothing for Altto to see, copy or keep.
