Why this runs in your browser, not on a server

A QR code often encodes something you’d rather not log on a stranger’s server — a private link, a Wi-Fi password, a phone number. Altto skips that step completely — there’s no server for it to go to.

Is there a limit on what I can encode?
You can encode up to 1,500 characters — plenty for a URL, a short message, or Wi-Fi/contact details. Longer text needs a denser code, which can be harder for some scanners to read.
Is my text sent anywhere?
No — nothing is ever uploaded. The QR code is generated entirely inside this browser tab, on your device. There’s no server involved at all, so nothing you type is ever seen, copied or kept by Altto.
What does “error correction” do?
Higher levels let a scanner still read the code even if part of it is damaged, dirty or partly covered — useful if you plan to print it small or add a logo. Higher levels also make the code visually denser.
Can I use this QR code commercially?
Yes — the codes are generated on your device and there's no watermark or licensing restriction from Altto.
Can I change the QR code's colors?
Yes — pick any code color and background color. Keep good contrast between them (a dark code on a light background is the safest bet) so scanners can still read it reliably; we'll warn you on-screen if your choice makes the code hard to scan.
Will scanners recognise a QR code for Wi-Fi or a contact card?
Most phone cameras recognise the standard format for a plain URL or plain text automatically. For Wi-Fi or contact-card (vCard) formats, paste the exact formatted string your target app expects into the text box.
Do you keep a copy of what I generate?
No. There's no upload, so there's nothing on our side to keep. See the Privacy Policy for details.
